Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the time commitment for volunteering?
A: Every role is a little different! We will work with you to determine which role(s) work best for your schedule.
Q: Is orientation/training required to become a volunteer?
A: Yes, a 90-minute volunteer orientation is required in order to become a general GCC volunteer. These are typically held one Saturday per month at the Downtown Clubhouse in River North. Additional individual training may be required for certain roles.
Q: I don't live in the city of Chicago. Can I still volunteer?
A: Yes! If you live in the Chicagoland area, we often are invited to outreach events in the suburbs. If you are even further, we have a virtual event host role and a reminder phone call role that can be done from anywhere with reliable internet access.
Q: What are the next steps after I submit my application?
A: Our Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, Debbie Slowinski, will be in touch with you regarding your application and to schedule your orientation date.
Q: I'm a current member of Gilda's Club Chicago. Can I still volunteer?
A: Absolutely! Our members are some of our greatest champions and play an important role in sharing the impact of our programs. That said, if you are currently participating in individual counseling or have recently started a weekly support group (within the past 8 months), we kindly ask that you wait before volunteering. This helps ensure you can fully focus on your own support and healing before taking on a volunteer role.
