On September 21, GCC proudly partnered with the Chicago Red Stars women’s soccer team to honor Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month during their home game against the San Diego Wave. This special event not only brought attention to ovarian cancer, but it also highlighted the strength and resilience of those impacted by cancer, including our namesake, Gilda Radner.
Gilda Radner, the beloved comedian and original cast member of Saturday Night Live, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986. Despite her resilience during treatment, she passed away in 1989. Gilda openly shared her journey with the public, raising awareness about ovarian cancer and advocating for better support for individuals affected by cancer. In her honor, Gilda’s Club was founded to ensure that no one has to face cancer alone. Her legacy of laughter, courage, and resilience lives on through the work we do today, supporting individuals and families impacted by cancer.
In the lead-up to the game, GCC took part in outreach efforts to spread awareness about ovarian cancer, an often-underrepresented form of cancer that affects thousands of women each year. These efforts included sharing important information about the emotional and mental health support available through Gilda’s Club. As part of this partnership, some of our members were also gifted tickets to attend the game, giving them a chance to enjoy a night of soccer and connect with others in the community.
A highlight of the evening was the She Inspires Me Award, presented by Rush, which honors incredible women who are making a positive impact in their communities. GCC was proud to nominate Fredelyn Calla for this award. Fred is a second-generation Filipina-American, licensed clinical professional counselor, and board-certified art therapist who has been apart of GCC mental health programming since 2007. She is the facilitator of our bimonthly Living with Ovarian Cancer Support Group, our weekly Living with Cancer Support Group, and our bimonthly Metastatic Breast Cancer Support Group.
Fred’s deep commitment to supporting individuals affected by cancer, paired with her compassionate approach to therapy, has made a profound difference in the lives of many. As part of her recognition, Fred had the honor of stepping onto the field before the match to present the game ball, a gesture that underscored the importance of mental health care in cancer support and her significant contributions to the community.
This partnership between Gilda’s Club Chicago and the Chicago Red Stars was a powerful reminder of the strength found in community, sport, and awareness. Together, we stand with those affected by ovarian cancer, continuing to raise awareness, offer support, and inspire hope. Gilda’s legacy of resilience lives on through these efforts, ensuring that no one has to face cancer alone.
